Input/output Devices
An I/O device is any hardware that is used to communicate with the computer it is designed to send and receive data to and from a computer. Some of the commonly used I/O devices are monitor, keyboard, mouse, printer, scanner, and touchscreen.
Let’s briefly learn about I/O devices one-by-one.
Monitor
A monitor or display is the most common output device of the computer that provides a visual output. It is also called a visual display unit (VDU). It is not possible to do anything on a computer without a display such as a monitor. A monitor is composed of a circuitry, display screen, power supply, and buttons to adjust the settings and the casing. IT receives signals from the graphic processing unit or GPU and displays it. Based on the technology used to make the monitors, they can be of three types:
·         CRT (Cathode Ray Tube)
·         LCD (Liquid Crystal Display)
·         LED (Light-Emitting Diodes)

Keyboard
A keyboard is an input device that is used to enter data and instructions into a computer or similar device. Based on the type of connection, a keyboard can be wired or wireless. A wired keyboard connects to the motherboard via a USB cable or a PS/2 connection (for older keyboards). A keyboard can connect to a computer either wireless via Bluetooth or via an RF receiver. A laptop has an integrated keyboard.
Figure shows examples of keyboard.

Mouse
A mouse is an input device that is used to instruct a computer by pointing at and clicking on thing/icons on the monitor. It can have two or three buttons including a scroll wheel. Similar to a keyboard, a mouse can be wired or wireless. A wired mouse connects to the motherboard via a USB cable or a PS/2 connection. A wireless mouse connects to a computer via Bluetooth or an RF reciver. A laptop has a touchpad instead.

Printer
A printer is an output device that prints the output on paper. Different types of printer include dot-matrix printer, ink-jet printer, and laser printer. One of the recent inventions include 3D printer that prints real-life models of various objects. IT does not use ink instead it uses type of special printing material such as plastic, rubber, and metal.

Scanner
A scanner is used to digitize images so that they can be easily shared with others through a storage device such as pen drive or an email message. It works like a photocopy machine. Different types of scanner include flatbed scanner, handheld scanner, and drum scanner.

Touchscreen
Touchscreen is a type of computer display screen that is also an input dev ice. It allows the user to interact with a computer by torching the screen with their fingers or with a stylus pen instead of using a mouse and keyboard. When we tap the touchscreen, it registers the event and sends it to a controller for processing. Touchscreen can be used both as an input and output device. Nowadays, monitor and smart phones have touchscreen. ATMs also have touchscreen panels. The three main touchscreen technologies are: resistive, capacitive, and Surface Acoustic Wave (SAW).
