Types of Computers

Types of Computers
There are different types of computers, and they all are integral part of our lives. The categorisation is based on the most fundamental factors, including size, performance, and purpose.
Desktop Computer
A desktop computer is the widely used general-purpose PC that is not easily portable. It is meant to be kept at a single location usually on the top of a desk. It usually consists of monitor, keyboard, mouse, speakers, and system unit (or case). A desktop computer notably costs less for the same features (Processing power, storage, etc.) than a portable computer like a laptop. Figure 1 represents a desktop computer with speakers, monitor, computer case, keyboard, and mouse.

Laptop
A laptop or notebook computer is a type of PC that is small and portable, which means that it can be carried around easily. It is smaller than a desktop computer but runs the same applications as a desktop computer. It runs on rechargeable battery and can be used while on the go. The laptop has a ‘clamshell’ form factor with an attached keyboard, touchpad, and a screen. Both laptop and desktop computers run on desktop operating systems such as Windows and Mac OS X.
Figure 2 shows a laptop running on the Windows 7 operating system.

Tablet
A tablet or tablet computer is a portable PC that typically runs on a mobile operating system such an Android and iOS. It has an LCD touch-screen display, which is used for both input and output. It runs on battery like a laptop. A tablet is usually smaller than a laptop but larger than a smart-phone. It runs small and less complex computer programs call apps. Figure 3 shows a tablet (iPad) running on iOS.

Smartphone
A smart-phone is a mobile device that can perform various functions of a computer; for example, accessing the Internet and running apps. It is an ultra-portable computer that runs on a mobile operating system (such as Android and iOS). It is smaller than a tablet and can easily fir in one hand and pocket. Like a tablet, it has touch-screen interface. Figure 4 shows a smartphone (iPhone) running on iOS.

All-in-One PC
An all-in-one PC is a slim and compact desktop computer that integrates the computer components into the monitor case. It contains all necessary computer parts such as the system unit and speakers in one unit, except the mouse and keyboard. Figure 5 shows an all-in-one PC.
