Motherboard and its Components
A computer is composed of several components, where each
component has its own attributes that function collectively. Motherboard, also
known as system board, is the most important component around which a computer
system is built. It is the largest Printed Circuit Board (PCB) present inside
the system unit and is designed to hold together many important electronic
components of a computer system such as the Central Processing Unit (CPU), Hard
Disk Drive (HDD/Solid-state) Drive Basic Input/output System (BIOS), sound
card, video card, network interface controller and power supply.
All these components are connected to the motherboard via
sockets, expansion slots and connectors (for I/O devices and other important
peripherals).

Motherboard
and Its Importance
The basic function of the motherboard is to hold the
electronic components of the system in place, and establish some sort of
bridge-like connection between those components and ensures that every signal
is sent where it is needed, interpreted correctly and then passed on to its
final destination.
The motherboard doesn’t have actual processing power of its
own, and relies on other components such as CPU and Graphic Processing Unit (GPU).
Each Therefore, the motherboard is often considered as the backbone not only of
the PC but also of all other electronic devices including smart phones, game
console, and so on. It is the most important part of a computer system without which
the computer cannot function. It is important to understand the components and functionality
to be able to design and build your own PC.

Before discussing the motherboard form factors, let us
quickly discuss the types of motherboard.
Types of Motherboard
There are mainly two types of motherboard:

Integrated
·
Non-integrated
Let us now discuss the above in
details.
Integrated
Motherboard: In this type, the components are built into the board
themselves. The CPU, video card, network card, ports (serial, parallel), are
built into the motherboard. Although this is cheaper in comparison to the
non-integrated motherboard. It is actually high on maintenance. Integrated motherboards
are used in laptops due to their comparatively smaller form factor. Figure
shows an integrated motherboard.
Non-Integrated
Motherboard: Here, the components are installed separately as expansion
boards. For example, a non-integrated motherboard may allow you to replace your
old sound card with a new one. This type of board is low maintenance and
available at a relatively cheaper cost. Figure shows a non-integrated
motherboard.
